"It's not too late; We have the rest of our lives."

Dear son,

I know that I left you
your mother, your sisters,
five years ago, in a hectic world
I know that you hate me for being gone
And nothing I could say would mend things
would it?
The china, your mother’s quilt,
the fabric of our family, past repair
My wife passed on, my daughters long gone,
everything I knew and loved
dust
But I’m sorry
for the fatigues, the rucksack,
I had to go
And I hope your freedom now
is worth the price I paid.
Your mother is here, too
She sends her love

Signed, dad.
