Cold Shadows
Silently I walk beside them,
 Taking in their frenzied lives,
Now before me lies a shadow,
 Moving, flickering, shifting guise.

 Other lives and high ambitions,
Fill the space with power, poise.
 I stand oddly disconnected,
 Watching, making little noise.

Their concerns do not ensnare me
Cold at heart, I see them fail.
 Unencumbered, I, the shadow,
 Ever distant, ever pale.

 Always watching, sometimes learning,
 Knowledge as my only goal,
They see nothing but a shadow,
 Lacking substance, lacking soul.

 Busy lives will soon forget me;
Watch them as they speed away.
Watch them as the single shadow
Fades to dark at close of day.
