Resplendent smiles
Dance on our lips.
So long ago
Since we were
Together
Sisters and friends.

Our stomachs hold
The weight
Of last night's turkey
And relief
After whispering
Our fears, failures,
Pressures, and pride
Together.

Four forks in hand,
We dig inside
To expose
The gooey
Sweet apple.
The crisp buttery
Crust cracks,
Revealing a cinnamon scent
Wafting and swirling,
Consuming
Us

We savor the taste
Touch
Tranquility
In a minute

Gone

The author's comments:
I wrote this poem because I wanted to catch the happiness I felt with my friends and sister. We shared stories poured our hearts to each other- truly bliss. We only see each other about twice a year which is heartbreaking. The poem is a metaphor; the pie represented us being together and savoring life while it lasts.
I made description that paints a picture in my head and makes me go hungry. I added some vocabulary and descriptive words to make the pie come alive. I added alliteration for a better flow. I made line breaks for emphasis. In my revisions I tried to make the meaning show clearly. I think I could work on connecting the pie to friendship because the relationship is a bit unclear. I am giving the poem to my friends and Sophia.

I know it's been awhile since you posted (and since I have gone on to teen ink), but I just wanted to say thank you! It means a lot to me that you enjoyed the poem. :)

I've heard that sometimes Teen Ink edits the work they put in the magazine. They probably posted the edited version. I hope that helps! I love both versions, they really communicate the bond you have with your sister!
