I can't stand it out here.
I want to go

Outside.

I want to go
where the air is

clean

and where

my heart can breathe.
I want to follow

his skinny frame,

down

our

rabbit

hole
and back again.

Back to neverland and wonderland

and the Underworld and even

HEAVEN.

Because we are

like angels

in God's pantheon.
But unlike him,

I am long gone.
Banished
from HEAVEN

for knowing too much
or not knowing quite

enough.

I do not blend

or flow

or ebb
like saltwater tides

across salty sands

and even saltier lips.

I do not bind myself

to any man

to any heart

to any soul
for I am shadow,

a shell of a former self,
and therefore am unlovable

in my

b R ok E n ES sS.

He pieces my fragile

TOGETHER.
He makes me, us, we, them, they, I, you, him, her, she, it, he,
WHOLE. COMPLACENT. PERFECT
in our imPerFectIoN.

His lips, like a story,

to match my own | to match my own.
His eyes, like a lifetime,

mirror his regret,
when he knows he can no longer hold my
hand.
And I tell him,

in child whispers
just
before

bed.
That I am in like with him,

in the most wondrous like.
And one day, secretly,

I will be in such love for him,
a love like Juliet to her Romeo,

though

not tinged with
tragic

stupidity.
He laughs, like rain falling
on the roof.

he, I,
we go.

into a world unknown.

And with kisses
and handshakes

and secret laughter,

we descend into our own,

our twisted, marvelous,
ever-changing,
ever after.

The author's comments:
I was inspired by the twisted, nonsensical nature of Alice in Wonderland, and then I realized life was really the same way.
