Lessons in Literature
I read Salinger one year too early
I've grown up now, exposed them all as a phony
What are you masquerading as in your cubicle life?
 It's all the same
 Just an unbeatable game

Yet we try, ever harder, of our own volition
I would rather kill myself than worry about tuition
The walls, they get narrower, in the rat race maze
Realities surpass dreams, nights surpass days
 And the clock ticks louder
 And the game becomes fouler

And we stumble--Onward!--With our laces untied
Trip over roadblocks thrown in from each side
I was once told to reach for the sky
Before they set the standards so unbearably high
 No one referees life
 March onward in strife

I read Salinger one year too early
I've grown up now, exposed them all as a phony
