Newton IL.
I love it there,
in the summer,
so peaceful and quiet.
Watching the squirrels
climb the tree to snatch
offerings of corn.
I loved to eat there.
my grandmother
stirring the peas,
checking the ham,
and preparing potatoes.
There was nothing
she could not accomplish,
peas and corn,
ham and beans,
cakes and pies.
Everything better
than the stores’.
I miss her garden,
when she moved,
it died with the house.
Alone and forgotten.
