The drugstore on the corner
We left our school early that day
As we took the old dirt road
We’re only going for a walk
At least, that’s what I was told

 We walked along the sidewalks
That were in my familiar town
 His footsteps getting faster
 We didn’t make a sound

We finally came to the place he said
 The drugstore on the corner
I could feel the question mark above my head
As he headed through the door

 I couldn’t believe my eyes
Was I seeing what I saw?
He bought three packs of cigarettes
Even though it was, for him, against the law

 Over the next few years
 I noticed changes in Jack
 His clothes smelled terrible
And his teeth were turning black

Then one night he went out
Only a few drinks he said
I still don’t know why he did it
What was going on in his head?

We got the call in the morning
 Right after I got up
Jack was gone, his life over
He had run out of luck

So I tell what has happened
So that people know what is in store
These are the consequences that wait
If you walk through this door
