I cannot hear myself
over the roar of the washing machine;
It screams in its dusty corner
as it gargles my dirty socks
The beast in the dusty corner
steadily pounds its dhimay drum
and the change in my left pocket
rattles right along.
Its water churns loudly
drowning out my thoughts
as I wonder whatever happened
to washboards and wringers.
My teeth grind together and
my ears ache with the noise
of this Rent-A-Center machine
soon to be taciturn remains.
And that was just the rinse cycle
