The Second Choice
When you’re the second choice
You don’t get your hopes up
You wait and see which friend they choose first
Sit and smile as the third wheel
The odd one out in every group
When you’re the second choice
You tend to learn how to be invisible
Keep quiet and only talk when you need to
You sit there and admire everything
The relationship you could’ve had
When you’re the second choice
You try not to get jealous
You tell yourself your time will come
Not to rush things and be patient
Everything will fall into place
When you’re the second choice
You tell yourself not to like people
Inevitably you do but never act on it
The stings from rejection still too hot
Often staying away from love
When you’re the second choice
You become the peacemaker
Between fights and sadness
You’re reassuring the relationship
Telling them they’ll work it out
When you’re the second choice
You tell yourself it’ll be okay
So you wait and wait and wait
Wait your turn till you find your piece
The other half comes for you
When you’re the second choice
It’s easy to be number two
For me, I’ve never been second
Or first, or third, never in the top three
But somehow always ended up last

This piece was written after I had an experience where someone ranked all of my friends in an order of who they would date, and I came dead last. It is also based off of my experience where my friends are often the first choice, and I am a fallback option for them.
