Eternal Winter
Eternal Winter
Don’t go into the light - how could I not?
From birth comes the idea of light and dark, of
good and evil - why wouldn’t I?
Is the light not warm, is it not there to protect
me from whatever hides from it?
It ebbs and flows ever so smoothly, calling
my name with its gentle tongue.
The light and dark clash yearly, I am a spectator.
My mind is merely a battleground for light
and dark - two powerful forces, their
war eternal as winter.
There’s a familiarity to the darkness -
I have attended this annual party before
as the guest of honor, the center of it all.
I have declined my invitation countless times,
but darkness persists - for it knows of its limited time.
Yet even spring must come eventually,
as this predictable earth spins on its axis.
A ceasefire, bliss comes for three temporary seasons.
Weather shifts, birds come back, new life can be
found everywhere - even in myself.
I succumb to the lights alluring call, turn
my face to the warmth of the new spring sun.
As it happens every year, I find the right path,
illuminated by the newfound light,
yet sometimes I wonder -
will the darkness ever win?
