“Half of”

You ask me, “when do you find time to sleep?”
I laugh and say, “I never do.”
But that can only be half the truth.
Exhaustion is a state of being.
Overwhelmed is a state of mind.
You ask me, “how do you handle all these responsibilities so well?”
I laugh and say, “I really don’t.”
But that can only be half the truth
I am tired of being exhausted.
My mind can’t handle being overwhelmed.
You ask me, “how are you?”
I laugh and say I’m doing great!”
But I can only wish that was even half the truth.
I worry you can see how exhausted I am.
I worry which makes me feel even more overwhelmed.
You tell me, “I’m glad you’re doing great!”
I laugh and say, “thank you.”
But only because you don’t know the half of it.

The author's comments:

This piece is about the struggle of students and my personal struggle of being a student. As a person who has a strong work ethic and wants to be deeply involved in, I find myself being a people pleaser. People pleasing has led me to being stressed and displeased with my own actions.
