Papercuts
my mother once told me i complain too much but that’s only because it really did
hurt
so i stared at myself in the mirror and told myself that i was
lying
the next time i felt an ache in my chest, i kept it a
secret
locked in a safe, but the safe is made of flimsy
paper
and the back is ripped and i have too many
papercuts
on my hands and neck and lips and
heart …
i stole my mother’s ointment but she never even
noticed
and one day it will be empty
and one day i will bleed
with nothing left to soothe my pain

Papercuts can be incredibly painful. I think that kind of mundane pain can be representative of a lot of things--simple things like passing comments can be just as painful as direct insults, if not more.
