A Pretty Mask

The crown of gold, silver and a dash of red
lies heavily on my head.
My feet beat the ground in rhythm one at a time.
Their beat says powerful and steady,
but in my head, I'm just not ready.
Sweaty palms, head held high,
confident look,
but I want to cry.
They don't see what lies underneath
all that glitter, shine, and glow.
They don't see the thoughts that stab my self-esteem,
they just don't know.
