The Burdened Questions of a Teen
Glows of phone screens lighting up the dark room
Eyes wilting into the night like flowers that haven’t been cared for
Waiting for that sound,
that buzzing like a bee sound to come from the phone
That text from them that will make you feel found
It is the same every day when the sun is out and every night when the moon sits in the sky
Talk, flirt, talk
Oh, how much you like them, and they like you
But what are we?
Scrolling into an endless black hole of manipulated reality
Photo after photo
Another person’s life after another
Now placed back into your own
Smearing makeup on your face
And grabbing at your hair
Frustrated eyes staring into the mirror before you
A million thoughts roll in your head, one most prominent from the rest
But will I ever be pretty like the rest of them?
Sweatpants and a sweatshirt swaddle you for the day
Sweetened smiles face yours as you return the expression
Small laughs barely fill the space as you talk to others
Everything rushing by you as fast as light
The day is gone before you know it
And now in bed you lay
Tears fall upon your cheeks
Your eyes close shut tight
You take a deep breath and go downstairs to join your family
An artificial smile on your face
But will I feel genuine again?
Question after question fill your everyday life
Fighting for some type of uncomplicated flow
Fighting to feel normal
Fighting to feel alive
Fighting to have peace with yourself
But when will that happen?
