"We don't choose where we come from, but we can choose where we go from there." -The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Oh, you are the spirits that I worship in my cult.

You are what makes the night dark,

The dimming of the lights,

And the fall of my heights.

Your presence helps but hurts,

I try to find a new spirit but you won’t accept it.

I sacrificed to you and you seem to be unpleased,

Haunting my thoughts for eternity.

If I drink from your cup I won’t wake up,

But the longer I don’t drink the stronger you are.

Oh, you bring me to my knees,

You’re a Bad Religion.

The only way I can talk to you is through a mirror,

You curse me when I speak

And yet I feel the same.

Have I become numb to your powers,

Or have I lost feeling from everything,

Or have I begun to lose my faith in you?

My life is balanced on my head like steak knives,

And is constantly leaning side to side.

I gave you my all and you still lashed out at me,

Leaving the scars on my body,

Now I can’t trust no one.

I find love and you turn it to hate.

I find peace and you bring chaos.

I live but you want me dead.

I pray to a god but you’re the one speaking for me.

My reflection is no longer mine,

But of someone that I once was.

When I have lost faith in you,

I will be free at last,

But you would have still succeeded,

As you had killed what I once was,

You have stripped me from my Identity,

And forced me into a new one.

You are my challenge,

My curse,

My demise,

You are my Mental Illnesses.

The author's comments:

My name is Jaden Wolmutt, a senior in high school and a teen/young adult who suffers from mental illness. My poem is about how my mental illness has over taken me and changed me, no matter what I try to do... feeling lost in my battle against it. This poem was originally made for an English assignment I had but was turned into my voice, and my truth, listening to Bad Religion by Frank Ocean I wrote.
