The house is silent,

As the trees swing their melody, swish, it goes

The percussive rain drops thunk on the window, tap, it goes

And the itty bitty worms wriggle on the street.

The wind starts moaning, whoosh, it goes

He glances outside and puts on his glasses, clink, it goes

Scurries to the coat rack, thump, it goes

slides his rain boots on, squeak it goes,

She tells him to stay, as she watches him go,

Turning the rusty doorknob, and clack, it goes

He comes back inside right away, click, it goes,

with his muddy boots, screech, it goes

His soaking raincoat, drip it goes

And is greeted by a scolding, yell, it goes.

The author's comments:

This poem is about a boy going out in the rain, and how he comes back inside. In this set piece, I was playing with epistrophes, which is where certain words/phrases are repeated at the end of a sentence. At the end of each line I repeat an onomatopoeia, which is a type of word which resembles a sound. What I like about this set piece is that the repetition has a bit of a rhythm.
