pride
the silence that consumed the dinner table
was enough to make me regret the words that had just fell from my mouth
with years of hiding, the thought of confessing seemed nice
like getting the weight of bricks off your shoulders
but looking at the disappointment in every pair of eyes
how could i be proud of who i was?
the questions and reprimands that came after
helped me realized that place was no longer home
just a house with no acceptance
just the idea of a ‘perfect’ family
just a delusion

although it is not a personal piece, it is something that is very real. kids being who they are and their familites not accepting them has been the reality for years. the idea of homophobia is a topic that will always be controversial, but families should at least respect their children enough to support who they are.
