“nothing’s wrong” she replied
the rosy colour on her cheeks slowly fading.
“something’s wrong” whispered her conscience
“nothing’s wrong” she replied
the weight of her eyelids escalating.
“something’s wrong” whispered her conscience
“nothing’s wrong” she replied
the number on the scale getting lower.
“something’s wrong” whispered her conscience
“nothing’s wrong” she replied
the pit in her stomach growing larger.
“something’s wrong” whispered her conscience
“nothing’s wrong” she replied
the salty tears stinging her cheeks.
“something’s wrong” whispered her conscience
“nothing’s wrong” she replied
the length of her showers getting longer.
“something’s wrong” whispered her conscience
“nothing’s wrong” she replied
the time she spent with her friends diminishing.
“something’s wrong” whispered her conscience
“nothing’s wrong” she replied
the portions on her plate becoming miniscule.
“something’s wrong” whispered her conscience
“nothing’s wrong” she replied
the naps she took more and more frequent.
“something’s wrong” whispered her conscience
“nothing’s wrong” she replied
the appetite she once had, slowly disappearing.
“something’s wrong” whispered her conscience
“nothing’s wrong” she replied
the thought of eating becoming a trigger.
“something’s wrong” whispered her conscience
“nothing’s wrong” she replied
the effort it took her to breathe becoming greater.
“something’s wrong” whispered her conscience
but she wasn’t there to reply.

TW: Eating Disorder
I wrote this because I feel that mental illness is very stigmatized and it is hard for people to speak up. Eating disorders are one of the many different types of mental illness that people struggle with. I hope that this poem opens the eyes of people and brings awareness to the struggles of mental illness. I also hope that anyone struggling knows that they aren't alone.
