The King Goes to War
The king goes to war they say, the king goes to war
they whisper and sigh, what about his daughter they sing,
to rule she will,
but who will rule beside her they ask,
she has no sons and no brothers and her husband is dead,
the servants ask and wonder,
the nobles twitter and sigh, who will rule beside?
The king goes to war they say, the king goes to war
they murmur and mumble,
his youth is gone they sigh,
and in its stead wisdom there is, but is he strong enough to survive the battlefield,
the soldiers ask and wonder,
the nobles twitter and sigh, will he survive?
The king goes to war they say, the king goes to war
they moan and cry, what about our sons they sing,
What about your sons?
What about our husbands they cry,
What about your husbands?
What about our fathers they mourn,
What about your fathers?
The women ask and wonder,
the nobles twitter and sigh, are they safe inside?
The king goes to war they say, the king goes to war,
none will rule beside,
the king has not survived,
the nobles are not safe inside.
They all die.
