there is a sea inside my soul
there is a sea inside my soul
and today, i will set it aflame.
it will steam quietly, as it has forever
eternity told me the sea won’t burn
but i will make it disappear—
its depths hidden not just from you
blindness engulfs me, too
the horizon is hazy and
are the flags out there ebony or ivory?
or red, sparking with the blaze of a thousand suns
a warning, the dies ire of the oceans—
the tsunami approaches, run for cover,
leave, escape now while you can
yet i rush towards the receding tide
because just like you
i am desperate to know what lies beneath these murky waters
but unlike you
there is no angel on my shoulder
there will not be time later
no, there is only Virgil
and hand in hand, we race through the sands
carrying kerosene and matches
if we pour enough into this sea
will it burn up?
evaporate?

sometimes i wish i didn't have to be so poised. so "grown-up" so young. some days i just want to set the sea inside my soul--these "deep thoughts" and
insightful ideas"--on fire and create some chaos.
