Static Parents
My remote was like a pencil
Like an author, I used it to write my story
Flipping through channels
I found self in Nickelodeon and Disney
I used my remote like an artist uses a nice HB No.2
I sketched dreams from pictures on the screen
My remote was like a studentspencil
I studied jokes to tell later
I learned how to be a person from sitcoms and dramas
My remote even takes notes for me
I can read them back through recorded episodes of Austin & Ally and Gravity falls
When I wasn't holding a pencil
I was holding a remote
Unlike a pencil however
my remote was a parent.

I feel a lot of children were raised by media as I was, many of the experiences that shaped me when I was younger came from the time I spent crouched in front of a television. Since my Dad worked all the time, and my mother was usually incredibly tired from work, it felt as if the characters were a second family in a way. cartoons were my escape, a way for me to be with friends when I was at home. As I got older I realized that a lot of the values I have come from the resolutions at the end of the shows I watched growing up.
