To My Immigrant Mother
Mothers Day
It is not today
But everday
That we must celebrate them
That we must thank them
That we must be grateful for their sacrifices
I can only imagine the pain
The confusion
The fear
And most importantly,
The dedication
Of leaving a country you've set your roots in for years
To a country you know nothing about
For the sake of your children
Of leaving the homeland of your mother tongue
To a country where you must learn how to speak from scratch
For the sake of your children
Of moving across the world with a partner who is a stranger
For the sake of your children
Here's to my mother
A woman who gave me a better life
While sacrificing her own

This piece started out as my eleventh grade English assignment yet turned into a beautiful ode for my mother. I've never been able to vocally express the love and appreciation I have for her. This allowed me to let her know how I feel towards her through words. I tend to share my emotions (and organize them) through words best and believe it's one of my greatest qualities and coping mechanisms.
