My Burning House
“When you grow up in a burning house
You tend to think the whole world is on fire” -Richard Kandrey
Everytime I step outside
My lungs are stunned by how painless it is
to breathe.
When you grow up in a burning house
The air starts to feel like
Home
I don’t really feel the burning anymore
Because it’s all I've ever known
I grew up thinking the world was on fire
That everyone lived in flames
Then I look out my window
And saw
The rest of the world
Hadn't ended
But mine
Was close to nothing at all
Part of me is glad that there’s nothing left
For him to set fire to
Now I can grow
through the rubble of my fallen house
When I am finally tall enough
To see past this debris
I hope the sunshine fills me up
And in the end I feel free
