Heritage
From my mother,
a shattered mirror put together by tape,
she leaves me with resilience,
the ability to recover from difficulty,
and a heart too big,
that breaks my own soul.
From my father,
a car without brakes,
I am left with narcissistic tendencies,
the behavior I never want people to see,
and an addiction to work,
that made him miss his daughter's childhood.
From my Ninang,
a bottle of regrets,
I am given the hope of doing better than her,
a weight on my chest that is hard to lift,
Another expectation.
From my baby cousins,
my joy in life,
their innocence and happiness is my greatest quality,
a reminder that life will always get better.
From my family,
I learned blood is not thicker than water,
especially when it comes to us.
