It multiplies in quantities of rabbit babies

Carries a bite more excruciating than rabies

It rots your heart and spoils your head

Possesses the strength to leave millions lying dead

It preys on the most unexpected of beings

Finding pleasure feasting upon our wellbeings

Spreads briskly like the wildest of California’s fires

It sparks up shortages and outages just like some wires

The subtle samurai that slays mankind

We acknowledge the conflict but pretend to be blind

Lacking fangs but boasting an appetite for my peers

It raises hell and forms societal fears

You may be able to outrun it, but only for so long

It’ll eventually catch you and prove itself strong

Shut down the world along with love and peace

Remains a mystery when this epidemic will cease

It’s more fearsome than any monster in the closet

Many attempts have been made to stop it

The virus of a storm lingering over the people

Intimidating like it's a reincarnation of the grim reaper

Assuming the virus in question is Covid, would be an inference incorrect

As hatred is the real virus with the most mutilating effect

The author's comments:

I intended this piece to be a large metaphor comparing the coronavirus to hatred. By using examples of shortages, societal fear, and making this "virus" seem like a monster attacking humanity, it could be interpreted as a poem about the damage the coronavirus pandemic has summoned upon the world.  If it were not for the last two sentence stanza (which was meant to be only two sentences so it would stand out and flabbergast readers), many would assume that the connections to the effects caused by the coronavirus pandemic could also relate to the effects that hatred has on the world. Topics revolving around the theme of hatred signified in this piece are war, greed, competition, and how it affects everyone. More references mentioned in this piece are the fear hatred causes amongst people, and how common it is in the modern era.
