Anxiety Feels Like...
Anxiety is like
brilliant light
Paralyzing manifestation
of absent existence
Busy nothingness
Disarray of the conscious
Defenseless against
your own judgment
Anxiety harmonizes
like ocean waves
If the Universe is fair;
why does the crashing
grow louder
Cold salt water
crawls up your limbs;
do you feel consumed yet?
Submerged in dread
The calm blue sea;
look for your reflection
in the void
Anxiety tastes like
sour candy
You're supposed to appreciate
what you've been given;
just concentrate
on the sweet
The desire for plain tears;
as your tongue becomes torrid
Hide your lips as they curl;
all eyes observe
Dry the tears;
it's just sour
Anxiety smells like
downpour
The eternal storm
Fixate on the soft music;
omit the thundering drums
Stare at the flow;
blink at the bright outbursts
Why are you so fearful
of normalcy?
Anxiety feels like swinging
at the playground
Swing forward and
I recognize the blue;
why do you discover the stars?
Swing backward and
your stomach drops;
you prophesize what you yearn to see
You're afraid of being ignorant
to the heights ahead of you
Why can I feel this aura?

For teens and young adults, anxiety can be a feeling that numbs your words. Expressing how anxiety makes us feel can be a struggle, especially when its such a new feeling or something that has been so normal to us we wouldn't even think we're suffering. Not having the ability to tell a professional or a guardian what we are having trouble with makes us feel alone and unheard. I hope that publishing this poem would bring up some personal questions for those who may feel invisable. And encourage those to reach out for help if they need it.
