The Ache of Contentment

Most people spend their entire lives

looking for contentment

even if it seems futile.

A laugh

or just

having fun

would make me the happiest person in the world.

Once in the summer

I saw my mom

cooking some rice with beans in the kitchen

so I wanted to make her some

lemonade to cool her down.

So engrossed in her cooking

She was a world-class chef

about to serve

someone important like the President.

I got the lemons, sugar, and water and grabbed

a knife past my mom,

I had been practicing before.

I began cutting the lemons

but made a wrong move,

the next thing I knew the knife had fallen on my toe.

I let out a yelp which drew my mom’s attention,

when I looked up, I didn’t see a look of happiness

on her face, but a look of sorrow.

This is a poem that I emulated from Mahogany Brownes' "The Ache"
