Backroads of America
The car’s engine growls like a tiger,
Cruising down the backroads of Anywhere, USA,
The sky a muted, crystal blue,
Trees looming above loudly.
“Skinny Love” by Bon Iver is playing
On the radio with its broken screen,
Like sage green and spruce wood brown.
Tobacco is attached to every fibre
Of this stolen Chevy,
The stained seats reek with stories I don’t want to hear.
Your voice hums along,
A baritone rumble in your chest like an earthquake,
As an unsteady beat is tapped on the steering wheel,
One four three, one four three, one four three.
A map sits long forgotten in the footwell,
Red marker basking on the paper,
A destination disregarded,
Road signs ignored, miles passed.
I don’t know where we are,
Or where we’ll go,
But as long as you’re here,
Dear blood brother of mine,
I’ll follow you until the end.

This piece was inspired by my brother and the times we've driven together in his car with Bon Iver playing.
