California and Its Season(s)
they’re timeless
one could say
What Even Are Seasons?
of raw rebirth and evergreen that
burns red flame
yellow straw
greener in another year
Spring
slightly less cold
with pungent tar and rotten fumes
from specks of wet coat the air
to melt split ground of dirt
from mud decades old
mold fudge from sporadic drops
never in a lifetime
Summer
cotton and silk sticks to my back
and in our million dollar homes
of old
old
a break
(of sweat)
the sidewalk moves when we are still
Autumn
slightly less hot
because school starts here
but not really
if it never ended
(Autumn
a fan favorite
or at least it’s
my favorite
but of course, that's all that matters)
Winter
cold rush of hot air
snowfall replaces rain
never in a lifetime
the days get shorter
but our schools never close
because our streets remain coal black
like the buttons on a coat i never wear
the heat lingers on my skin, melting cold
imprinting fresh into bone
encore

Growing up in California, I couldn't help but notice how consistent the seasons are. My wardrobe never changed and the biggest change was a ten-something degrees difference in temperature. I hoped to capture the experience of living through "all four" seasons, emphasizing the smallest changes in lifestyle as time passed.
