Pennies
The human soul.
Its rusted curves taste like pennies we sucked on as children.
Young mistakes.
Clutching at our little throats,
Chubbed cheeks ablaze.
And painfully,
Pennies force their way out.
We choked and threw them up,
Little murderous copper coins.
With harsh warnings in their Lincoln faces,
They command us not to try again.
But we know no better,
And instead, pop another.

Hello! My name is RiYa B. The other day I found a penny behind my wooden dresser and got a kind of flashback memory. I remember when I was around 7 years old, my younger sister (4 years old) liked to suck on coins. We shared a bed and it was my job to make sure she wasn't sucking on change during the day and especially before we went to sleep. Unfortunately, she slid a small 1996 penny into her mouth while I was turned away. When I looked back I saw that she had begun to choke and I screamed. My dad hoisted her tiny body to the bathroom and started performing the Heimlich. She threw it up into the toilet. That was my inspiration :)
