You Are Finally Free
When you're a child, or at least it was this way for me when I was a kid,
there's nothing you look forward to more than summer vacation.
On the last day of school, the sound of that bell is a sacred thing.
After months of waking up early and doing tedious homework,
and being on your best behavior every day in class,
you are finally free.
You're finally free to cover your entire driveway in sidewalk chalk,
to run in the sprinklers when Dad waters the lawn,
to spend your allowance on candy, video games, and toys,
to invite your friends over to your house to play on the Nintendo Wii,
and to jump all the way to Jupiter on the trampoline in the backyard.
The sound of the ice cream truck's cheerful song
Is an alarm, telling you and all of your neighborhood friends
That it's time for a chase through the streets of your neighborhood.
You pursue the ice cream truck on your bicycles as fast as possible,
Until the driver finally stops the truck and sells you ice cream.
You're finally free to act like a child.
You don't have to behave well anymore,
Because you're on your own turf,
And no teacher or parent can control you.

I wrote this poem about summer vacation, the best thing that can possibly happen to you as a student. I have many memories of summer vacation, and I wanted to preserve them in a poem.
