we, the crows
life is too long, the days seem to stretch on forever
like a murder of crows blackening the sky on a cold november afternoon
harsh cawing emanates from the dark cloud of flapping shadows
out of the blackness a shape emerges diving so quickly and suddenly
another of us falls from a building, dark thoughts trailing behind like a cloak
we pluck our smoky feathers but they grow back twice as fast
overtaking our skin, mouths hardening shut tight no words escape
our bodies shrink and our minds stretch their legs
my eyes trail over the dark wings, new feathers thick and glossy
why, why do i feel so threadbare
scaled feet tipped with talons make a noise like dry leaves shaking as i shuffle along
cars thunder past, cawing from above drowned for a moment
i crave silence, long to cover my head with hands now gone
the whipping wind tears me apart
i leap
