a hidden cry
La Llorona is the myth you told your
Children
To make them be frightened into
Submission
It has been told for centuries.
Now, it is not a person but a feeling.
A feeling that lures your kids.
Makes them question their lives.
Their being.
It promises them an indefinite
Solution.
A voluntary ending.
Happiness that is nothing
But an illusion.
The loop of a rope.
The kick of a chair.
A bottle of colorful, rattling shapes.
It convinces them to end their despair.
Your children try to fight it.
Ignore the blackmailing.
But it is not enough for those
Who look down at passing cars.
Clutching the railing.
At night you will hear a scream.
A yelp.
Do not turn your ears away,
For it is probably your child
Crying out for help.

Mental health is a topic that is avoided tirelessly. Many see it as a dangerous secret that must be kept behind closed doors, regardless of who is forced to live in agony. Unfortunately, this issue is amplified in the Hispanic community. If you are suffering from depression, you have to keep it hidden, or else you will somehow be deemed ungrateful and crazy. Religion is also used as a means to further shame people. We have lost so many of our Hispanic teens because they felt helpless in a family that refuses to acknowledge their needs and provide them with the love they deserve. Those who suffer from mental health are not a burden and it is time for people to stop treating them as if they are unworthy of help. By the time parents realize they failed their children, it's too late.
