The Stares
I walk down the street counting every crack making sure not to step on them
People stare.
I walk into my favorite store counting every item on the wall
People stare.
I can’t hold eye contact but I can hold a conversation,
Touch is weird to me, but I know people love hugs so I get over it even though I cringe at the first sign of touch that I get.
I cover my ears when things get too loud around me
People stare.
I’m always smelling the air for different scents and even new ones I have not smelt yet
People stare.
I start to shake from all the people staring at me
Which makes me think even more people are staring at me than there already are.
Suddenly,
I feel enclosed
I feel as if people are huddling around me in a circle cutting off my breathing
I cry which makes people stare again.
People don’t understand me
I want them to
No
Reality, keep within reality
We dream for something to happen that is out of our reach, we WANT to be heard.

I am a huge advocate for people with special needs. I am in fact going to college for it, so I wrote a poem from the point of view of someone with autism. I want people to understand the struggles that they go through on the daily and for people to understand them.
