The world around me spins,

I have no control

Over what is going on.

Where am I?

No control.

The clock

ticks slowly;

My heart

beats faster

with each

excruciatingly loud

ticking sound.

What is going on?

No one responds.

Sluggish steps ----

moving in s l o w  m o t i o n

trying to get to the couch

as if quicksand is

under my dull converse.

Am I going to be okay?

I stare at the

red seconds hand

spin around the markings.

A minute went by,

at the speed of an hour

How fast is time really going?

The author's comments:

This piece is inspired by time itself and focused in on drugs and alcohol. I researched the history about time and why people study it, keep track of it, and why people percieve time differently. I thought it was interesting to learn about the factors that make time different for each individual. I learned about the mental health aspect behind it, the fear factor, and how drugs all change how long time feels. Specifically about drugs, people feel trapped within time and all drugs are different. In this poem I focused on alcohol and how it is an antidepressant and slows down time, making the room spin. I wanted to understand how it felt to be in different time altering situations.
