now unknown
there was a time when
i knew your face better than my own,
each and every line and freckle
ingrained in my memory.
i used to see your smile
swimming behind my eyelids at night
and wake up with your name
on the tip of my tongue,
thinking i heard the sound
of your voice.
you were the main character
in all of my dreams,
the featured face that stood out
and caught my eye.
being near you for a moment,
even if it wasn’t real,
made your absence easier to bear.
but the echoes of your laughter
would still haunt me when i awoke.
now, it seems like lifetimes
since i last saw you.
i think, if i passed you on the street,
your face would blend
in with all the other strangers.
that’s what we are now, isn’t it?
strangers?
