Annabelle the Ant’s First Snow
Today’s weather is very cold
with a chance of snow.
“What pleasant news!” the ants cried out,
And gathered by the window.
“Gather around village ants!”
Cried the mayor of the town.
“We must be ready for what’s to come,
Everyone settle down.”
But how the ants prepared, well,
It was pretty queer, indeed.
They went to gather buckets and nets
Instead of putting on their swede.
Ants like, Bo, Doe, and Joe
Said “Let’s get ready for action!”
Meanwhile, Chad, Lad, Brad
They had quite a different reaction:
They rubbed their bellies and smacked their lips
And lay down on the floor.
With their mouths open wide,
They cried “keep score!”
Annabelle, the worker ant,
Was busy getting prepared.
Because today was her first time
And she was rather scared.
“You really should be getting indoors,”
She reasoned to the other ants.
“The snowflakes they’ll come rumble and tumble.
It might be heavier than you’d expect.”
But the other ants they simply laughed
And bid her, “Join the crowd!
She’ll soon come to see what this madness be.”
“Oh for crying out loud!”
So Annabelle hid under her roof
All by her lonesome self.
Well, I suppose that’s not entirely true,
She was also there with Ralph.
So Ralph and Annabelle, they waited trembling
Fearing their friends’ states,
As the snow it came rumbling and tumbling
Upon their uncertain fates.
“First snow!” the ants shouted in glee
As the first thunder was heard.
And then not much could be made out
The snow made everything quite blurred.
But instead of the screams and shouts,
The slashing and the squishing,
Annabelle was sure she could make out
The sound of certain munching?
“Looks like we got good ol’ taters!
Perfect for this time of year.
Get your bellies stuffed, good folks!”
Could that be the mayor?
Finally convinced no one was dying,
Annabelle went outside.
To her disbelief (and Ralph’s)
It was verified:
The snow was not the dangerous typhoon
Like that one time on the bridge,
It was the crumbs of holy Pringles
Gifted by Mt. Fridge.
“Oh yippee!” Annabelle cried
And leapt outside in glee.
“What? Potatoes?” Ralph followed.
“They’re my favorite!” cried he.
So all the ants of Ant Town gathered
Under Mt. Fridge to feast.
Snow in their buckets and snow in their bellies
They ate until it ceased.
Now, Annabelle, Bo, Doe, and Joe
And Chad, and Lad, and Brad
All they do is wait for snow
(All except one poor lad).
For no one seems to have remembered
To take poor Ralph along.
Mostly he just stays inside
Singing his lonely song.
“Today’s weather is very cold
with a chance of snow.
“What pleasant news!” the ants cried out,
And gathered by the window…”
