It was always to be tragic,

two flames that burned too quickly.

We held each other knowing

that the next night might not come.

Some nights were quiet,

an empty pain filing the space.

Others were restless

spent trying to steal time from fate.

It was easy to forget,

in those perfect moments

That our time was coming to an end

We seemed infinite,

Destined to rule

Me beside you

Aristos Achaion and Philtatos

Best of Greeks and Most Beloved

It was an honor,

to lay beside you,

to call you mine,

to watch as you grew,

as people kneeled before you.

I always thought you were to leave first,

and I was the one who had to watch.

I was ready for it,

for the ripping pain.

But it was me who left,

and you never were prepared for that.

So now I watch,

as you tear the world apart.

All those stolen moments,

and all it took was me to twist fate.

Because now you bring an army

to its knees

in grief and rage

This was a freewrite poem that I wrote in my creative writing class. It is about Achilles and Patroclus who I wrote as lovers. The characters are from the Illaid and their story was written by Madeline Miller in Song of Achilles. Miller's book is where I got my inspiriation from after reading it. Once I read it, I instantly fell in love and so when the assignment was write a poem, I knew i would write about them together. This was written from the perspective of Patroclus.

For those unfamilar with their story, Achilles, is a mythological greek hero who was born a demigod, half human half god. He was destined for greatness and fought in a huge war called the Trojan War. It went on for years and it wasn't until Odysseus created the Trojan Horse that the war was over. Achilles was one of the best fighters but was brought down by an arrow shot by Paris.

Patroclus, was the friend, or in other versions like mine, Achilles's lover. From childhood they became inseperable and their love only grew throughout the war. After Achilles brought into the war against Troy, Patroclus followed him and thier love only grew there. Although tragedy struck when, while fighting, Patroclus was killed by Hector, throwing Achilles into deep grief and rage over the death of his soulmate.

I highly encourage you to read Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, it was one of the best books I have ever read, and the writing was just gorgous. It's one of my favorite books of all time and threw me for a loop at the end.

Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to read this!!

With much love,

Ciara
