Ode to Pineapple Pizza
You're so misunderstood.
I'm so sorry.
Pepperoni kings and cheesy queens
think they can walk all over you.
They share fake smiles but don't give you
a seat at the lunch table.
They flaunt their popularity
while you walk with your head down.
They use their burnt edges and jealousy
to distract from your beauty,
to hide your bright yellow shine
and your sweet, juicy flavor.
But they will never compare.
You are the perfect addition
to any slice of a piece of life.
You are more than any other
classmate of yours. You work well
in groups of either two or three.
But you never get any credit for
your contributions. You don't work for praise.
And you are definitely not a crowd favorite.
You are my little secret, my partner in crime,
the one I defend to all of the bullies.
And I always will.
So come sit with me, Pineapple,
we will face this world together.

I wrote this piece due to my undying love for pineapple as a pizza topping. With it being a divisive topic, I wanted to add to the humor and light-hearted nature of the piece by creating a metaphor to make it seem much more serious than it is. I came up with the idea of high school and incorporated that into the piece, treating Pineapple Pizza like a social outcast and treating other popular toppings like Cheese and Pepperoni as the popular crowd. I think this piece is really fun and is definitely one of my favorite poems I've ever written. Hope you guys enjoy!
