I said
“Why did you kill the snail?”
“it’s invasive,” she said
“It still had a life.”
“It’s gone now.”’
I think of everything within the depths of me and my heart
The outdoor calls to me
I say back
“I’m sorry.”
Such a beauty bound
to death
Dear bluebird with your chest puffed out
Sitting on my bike while droplets of rain fall down
You look so wonderful, calling to others
Why you left I do not know maybe,
to go home?
A home dying so
“I am sorry”
We’re taught not to litter
Yet we still do
Inevitably killing ourselves.
Killing you too.

The structure of this poem was inspired by the African author Ijeoma Umebinyuo's poem Love Letter to Adeyemi. I am passionate about the environment and my community so that played into the writing of this poem.
