sitting in the rose garden

surrounded by things oh so gorgeous

but oh so hurtful

drawn in by the exquisite beauty of the red flowers

and oblivious to the thorns

you feel secure in the garden,

until you play with fire

soon the green stem drips with blood

departing from the garden

you vow not to touch another rose

only to return the next week

and turn green to red all over again

The author's comments:

I wrote this piece using the roses as a metaphor for an abusive relationship. It's that feeling when you don't remember how dangerous someone is so you go back to them, get hurt, and come back again.
