Mutt
I have lived a partial truth.
My mother's family hails from Mexico
While my father is a half breed.
My grandmother is all European
And my papa comes from Sri Lanka,
But he is mixed with Dutchman blood.
My tata's siblings’ had colored eyes,
Which isn't "normal" for people of my kind.
There is much I never knew about myself before.
I never saw many children who looked like me.
Most of them were fair and skinny,
While I am tan and "bigger".
My mother never told me where in Mexico her family came,
Until halfway through 9th grade.
She doesn't care about her history,
But I need to know where I'm from.
Almost half of me is white.
So unbeknownst to her belief,
My mother has white men in her family tree.
Native blood is in my veins,
Stemming from the South American tribes.
About sixteen percent of my history,
Comes from my papa's island country.
Little did I know,
Different parts of Africa run through me.
Other countries in Asia is where
Some distant ancestors came.
My recent relatives did indeed
Come from Mexico,
Just as I believed.
The rest of me is an unsolved mystery.
My father said that I'm a mutt,
But that’s what makes me special.
Who else gets to discover
That many cultures pump through their chest.

I wrote this shortly after getting my results from 23andMe. I was really excited and shocked to know where my ancestors came from. Some of my results I already knew, but I didn't know the rest or how much I had in me. I think that more people should embrace all parts of themselves because there are some people who, like myself, come from all over the place. I am very proud to call myself multiracial.
