Black and Elegant in his tuxedo,

I looked at him with eyes in love.

It smelled like a dark night,

It was so mysterious,

Full of secrets, when I first smelled it.

The room was invaded by the freshness

of bergamot with a few citrus notes,

That’s what they told me.

He made everyone’s head spin.

I could feel it on my skin,

On my hair,

I could almost see it.

The closer I got,

The more I felt

The love and the excitement.

People say perfume is part of our soul,

They say it’s like magic,

Magic that captures the essence of life.

They also say that a good smell stimulates people’s imagination.

Ever since you left, all I do is look at that picture on my nightstand.

I remember that night,

I can see you in front of me,

You’re standing there spraying your damn perfume that drives me crazy.

Sauvage by Dior,

Grandma gave it to you last Christmas.

I haven’t seen you in two months,

But I can smell your perfume in the room.

I close my eyes and feel you beside me,

I can hug you now,

getting invaded by that smell I never get tired of.

That smell, that freaking smell.

Black and Elegant in his tuxedo,

I look at him with eyes in love.

He smells like a dark night,

But now he is here next to me.

The author's comments:

Poetry teaches us to see old things in new ways so what I tried to do with this piece is making the reader view a perfume with different eyes.  I tried to melt the perfume of the person with the image of the person himself by describing the feelings that the perfume was giving me and by using a flashback to give a better understanding of which moment I was living again through my imagination and the emotions given by the object.  I studied different literature in high school and I’ve always been fascinated by poetry but I never thought I’d write a poem in my life. I believe this work encompasses a bit of myself and my passion for writing. I tried to take inspiration from English, Italian, French and Spanish authors to create my own way of writing which I think is mostly based on the transmission of emotions and mystery. As I said before I like to put some suspense in everything I write and I like that the reader is free to interpret my works freely.
