What category do I fit into?
I don't want a dispute.
For some, I talk to proper,
And for some, not proper enough
I want to please all,
But I am afraid it could cause my fall.
Acting too "white" will make me seem stuck up,
But acting too "black" could get me locked up
The people around me,
Who I love and I adore,
Do not understand how much this shakes me at the core.
An example that in many minds seems far,
Is when I see a cop car.
The lights flashing bright,
I always make sure to act right.
"White or right," is the question some ask
As long as I'm respectful, I shouldn't have to worry.
The real question is,
When can we finally end this journey?

I am a 15-year-old girl who is half black and half white. I have experienced a lot of discrimination in my life because of it. This piece is one of the first poems that I have written on my own. It has always been hard for me to learn about and write poetry but this really opened my eyes. I had to do a creative writing anthology for my English class. This writing opportunity is one I am very grateful for and I can not wait to continue my writing in the future.
