O'America

O'America,
Land of the freely divided,

Of cacophonous choirs full of cackling politics,

Of bitter hate.

O'America,

Land of the freely welcoming,

Of the kind,

And of the intelligently brave.

O’America,

Land of the freely corrupt,

Of systematic injustice,

Of sickening tangling deceit.

O’America,

Land of the freely passionate

Of the do-er, and do-goods,

Of protesters and advocates.

Days I feel as though we have failed you.

And days I feel as though you have failed us.

O’America,

When the dust settles,

And all is normal again,

What will you represent then?

The author's comments:

O'America was written during the 2020 election when I was in lockdown. The poem speaks on my view of some of the current events happening in my country and was written for an assignment from school.
