A Black Pen

You strike the endless white that sheets the canvas below me

With a wild force that is only contained by three fingers

You are a sword and the blood will run thick and black

Though a sword’s main purpose is to destroy

You give life

The smooth silk-like paint that permeates the white creates whatever we may imagine

From the wildest fantasies that we fear to manifest

To the simplest doodles to keep our wandering minds on the page

You and I have given life to millions of words

Poems, stories, one-liners, essays, resumes, narratives

No one else would pull all-nighters with me but there you were every time I needed someone to hold

To the world around me, I am a living prison

Trapped in the walls of my own insecurities

But with you, I can break the chains that bound me to the ground

I can let my head wander the clouds

I can live

You have given me life

Because somehow your voice is louder than mine yet you still speak for me

In a world where everyone is screaming, with you, I feel noticed

You’re a black pen

Barely the size of my hand

But you are my greatest companion

Who I can call upon without response

Who is always waiting for me at the edge of my desk

The one I can say truly knows everything that does on inside my head

You are my black pen

The author's comments:

I wrote this piece when I had nowhere else to go but into a sheet of paper. In my life I found my strength through writing and in this piece I acknowledge what truly made my greatest insecurities into characters on a page.
