One Year Above Me
When I was only two feet tall,
As rowdy and whiney as can be,
I followed you around the preschool,
This kid one year above me.
We went to different grade schools,
Talked only occasionally.
But when we did, hours flew by,
You being one year above me.
I joined your scout troop, we spoke more often,
My annoyingness clear to see.
I mimicked you, became tolerable.
My mentor one year above me.
We got older, talked more deep,
I knew now not to mimic completely.
Since you taught me to be chill, I taught you to be real,
My equal one year above me.
Through my darkest hours, my lowest lows,
When I thought I would always be lonely
You gave me light, made me feel liked,
My friend one year above me.
But now we drift, we don’t talk much,
I know you see it too.
As years go on, I hope I’ll be more
Than some guy one year below you.

This is about a friend I've had since preschool. He's a grade older than me, as I keep reminding you, and he has a group of friends that don't really like me, so we don't talk much. The only times we really hung out was during boy scout summer camps, and the talks we had mean a lot to me.
