The last hour of my best friend’s life comes closer by the day.
I’ll give one last hug and one last treat beforehe slips away.
My parents will hug me close as I beg my dog to stay,
And my hands will shake and grip at air wishing for another play
I won’t be able to stall for long and the moment can’t last all day
A last tail wag and that will be that, his body will stiffen like clay.
I’ll fall apart; but luckily my mom says this hour is very far away.

This piece was written while I was having great fears of my dog growing old and passing away. While I dread the final rituals that have become my daily routine, the poem ends with the swiping of this fear under the rug by family who doesn't want to deal with temporary sadness, thus building the feelings for when the end really comes.
