"I always get to where I'm going by walking away from where I've been" - Winnie the Pooh <br /> "We have buried the putrid corpse of liberty" - Benito Mussolini

Ode to coffee
Stiff and crusty,
The morning shine greets me through my window.
You taunt my thoughts as soon I inhale
The first breath,
You spark what gets me through the day
keeping the headaches out
and the intelligence in.
I’m so grateful for your creator,
The person who grinded you up
To realize you could be used for fuel.
While the breakups take tolls on me
you are always on my mind.
The sleek pureness of your dark brown reflection
sends tingles up my legs,
and when your smell greets my nose
I am reminded of falling in love.
Oh coffee, what would I do without you.

Ode to lettuce
A wide range of collard greens
Velvety to the touch
Crisp as I masticate
Zero judgment when eating
Only appraisal
You deserve appraisal
Drenched in Italian or Ranch
Appetizing with salty olives
You are the perfect pairing for meals
How I crave you in famine
And in fullness
You are the perfect pairing for meals
Born from the ground
Once dirty
Then clean in my bowl
Carrots, celery, tomatoes alike
You are the perfect pairing for me.

The author's comments:

When I write my poetry, I tend to use intense and dark topics to dominate my message. I wanted to experiment with my skills by trying a lighter and more comical view on poetry, so I focussed on writing Odes. I chose my two favorite things to devour, coffee, and lettuce. Both items are not your normal favorite foods, so I decided to spread light on why I love them, hoping others could potentially relate to the beauty of these generic options.
