Something You Should Know
On December 10, 2015 I held the bullet in the palm of my hand
The bullet a man gave to me at his funeral
The bullet that pierced through the air in honor of him
I squeezed the bullet
My mind spiraled into memories
Memories that now seem like a fever dream
I remember my father telling my mother that he was sick
Then red and blue lights that flashed through the window pane
My friends mother picking me up and holding me tight
Watching the color of his skin turn yellow
Silence filling the room while eyes gazed down at the ground
Then I remember the strength
The strength that carried him through a war
The strength that raised a family
The strength that beat the odds
But my mind always goes back to the red and blue lights
So I close my eyes
I fold my hands around the bullet
I pray to God
I pray to tell him why I never could never could
I say, “goodbye”
